The 2009 Sustainable Sport and Event Toolkit (SSET) Seminar concluded on Friday, 19 June at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) with sustainable ideas, initiatives and practical insights.

The interactive seminar highlighted current best practices and innovative examples of sustainable sport planning to manage environmental, social, economic and legacy impacts and opportunities  created by the International Academy of Sports Science and Technology (AISTS) and the Vancouver Organising Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).  Matt Dolf, Research & Projects Manager/Assistant Director of AISTS and Ann Duffy, Corporate Sustainability Officer, VANOC served as moderators and presenters during the 2-day seminar. Presentations and practical workshops filled the agenda with a focus on interaction and providing real solutions. The practical definition that best summarised sustainability came from a presentation by Ann Duffy as she quoted the UN Bruntland Commission’s simple explanation that sustainability is attained by “meeting the needs of the current population without compromising the needs of future generations.”  Ms. Duffy continued, “Sport organizations, event organizers, sponsors and even athletes have the opportunity and responsibility to plan and participate in great events that strive to minimize their environmental footprint such as waste and energy use. They also have the opportunity to create community and business benefits like training, jobs, and local business endeavors. If planned early and in collaboration with key partners, spectators and television viewers can experience great sport while enhancing their awareness and motivation around healthy living and lifestyle choices.”

David Stubbs, Head of Sustainability for the London 2012 Organising Committee, detailed the London 2012 approach to sustainability and implementation of British Standard for Sustainable Events: BS 8901. Mr. Stubbs along with colleague Amanda Kiely, Sustainability Projects Manager, engaged the audience in a practical application of the London 2012 Sustainability Guidelines for Public and Corporate Events.  Several promising ideas were put forward from the participants, such as re-uses of building wraps for various applications and more sustainable alternatives to gift giving.

Attendees of the seminar, including International Sport Federations, National Olympic Committees, sport event organisers, and AISTS Masters candidates, had the benefit of presentations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), sport federations, sponsors, corporations, and academic institutions. An event highlight came in the form of a virtual presentation from Jack Groh, Director of the National Football League’s (NFL) Environmental Commission. Mr. Groh spoke via video conference from the University of Southern Florida and gave the audience compelling examples of how the NFL is tackling their responsibility to reduce or mitigate their environmental impact. He also shared impressive cost savings figures that the NFL has realized through their environmental initiatives. For example, every US dollar the NFL spends on environmental projects returns $6.06 in cost savings or community benefit, and from a $4,800 investment into renewable energy, they have seen $400,000 in savings.

The SSET Seminar featured the practical experience of other experts from the emerging field of sustainable sport, including:

Full bios of all presenters can be found online at www.aists.org/sustainable.

The SSET is supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as its Principal Supporting Partner, and by European Athletics as its Development Partner.

During his presentation, Bill Glad emphasized the importance of the SSET, especially for smaller organizations such as his. “Most federations don’t have the resources and expertise to tackle the evolving need for sustainable initiatives themselves. Being part of a collective effort, sharing the expertise, resources and credibility of AISTS, VANOC and the IOC will help European Athletics provide leadership within our sport and develop a practical tool for our event organizers.”
