The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is based in Lausanne and influences the net change in the expenditures and earnings in the Lemanic Arc (the districts from Geneva to Aigle). This net change is due to the new funds flowing into the Lemanic area from the rest of Switzerland and the World. Additionally, the IOC is attracting the Olympic Family Members, especially the International Federations to install their headquarters in the city and the Lemanic Arc. Moreover, visiting Lausanne is becoming increasingly important for certain categories of business people and tourists (i.e. delegations, museum visitors). As a result, the net change in the regional output and earnings is positively influenced. Upon request of the International Olympic Committee, this study analysed the economic impact that the IOC is inducing on the city of Lausanne and the Lemanic Arc for the 28th Olympiad (2004 – 2007). It applied the standardised method as proposed by Barget (2001) following the studies of Stritt & Voillat (1998) and Junod (2005). Additionally, this paper was complemented by the analysis of intangible effects covering the increased notoriety of the city and the local population’s sense of pride invoked by hosting the IOC in Lausanne.
