The Sustainable Sport and Event Toolkit (SSET) Centre aims to give sport organisations the knowledge and tools to incorporate sustainability into their business practices and to execute sustainable sport events.

What is the Sustainable Sport and Event Toolkit?

SSET is an initiative developed by the International Academy of Sports Science and Technology (AISTS) and the Vancouver Organising Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).

It is a practical “how to guide” for organisers of domestic and international sports events as well as National Federations, International Federations, National Olympic/Paralympic Committees and Cities interested in making their sports and events more sustainable (i.e. low environmental footprint, ethical, inclusive and economically smart).

SSET integrates the management & sustainability practices recommended by the following organisations into a realistic application for sport events:

  • Olympic Movement Agenda 21
  • IOC Guide on Sport, Environment, and Sustainable Development
  • ISO 14001-14006 on Environmental Management Systems (ISO-Organisation for Standardisation)
  • ISO 26000 on Social Responsability
  • BSI 8900-8901 on Sustainable Event Management (British Standards Institute)
  • GRI G3 Sustainable Reporting Guidelines (GRI-Global Reporting Initiative)
  • SMRS (Vancouver 2010 Sustainability Management and Reporting System)

How will it help sport organisations?

Athletes, coaches, volunteers and organisation leaders want “to do the right thing” and are seeking guidance on how to start, develop and/or improve their efforts. The toolkit focuses on leadership and management (i.e. how to form a team, get started and integrate actions with existing teams and resources) and identifies environmental, social, and economic planning and management issues and opportunities related to:

  • event venue and site selection and construction
  • venue and office management
  • community and supply chain involvement
  • transportation and accommodation
  • catering, food and beverage
  • marketing and communications

Toolkit users will learn how to plan, implement and improve their plans and operational activities, communicate with stakeholders, and align with sponsors and community organisations.
